Alex Forsberg notched a natural hat trick against his former team to lead the Victoria Royals to a 5-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars and a sweep of the doubleheader. (Victoria won Friday’s game 3-2 in overtime). The Royals built up a 5-0 lead before the Cats got on the board. Patrick Gora stopped 30 of 35 shots in his PG debut in the net. The 20-23-1 Cougars start a four game home-stand Friday and Saturday against the 23-18-0-3 Portland Winterhawks. Prince George remains 3rd in the BC Division, a point ahead of Vancouver although the Giants have two games in hand.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings gave up the winning goal (by Josh Blanchard) with one second left in the third period as they lost 4-3 to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. It’s was the 5th consecutive defeat for the Spruce Kings who conclude an Interior Division road trip today (Sunday) in Penticton against the BCHL leading Penticton Vees.

–A big upset in the BC Major Midget League as the Vancouver NE Chiefs edged the league-leading Cariboo Cougars 3-2 in the first of a doubleheader at Kin 1. It was the Cougars first game since winning the Mac’s tournament in Calgary.

–The Northern Cougars female midget hockey team outscored the Kootenay Wildcats 9-2 and 5-1 in Saturday action.

–The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team nipped the MacEwan Griffins 89-87 to get a split of the their two games in Edmonton. The MacEwan men won 85-77 Friday. Both teams are 4-6 in Canada West standings. In women’s play, MacEwan dumped UNBC 69-53 Saturday and 81-48 Friday. The Griffins are 8-2 while the Lady Timberwolves slip to 1-9. The UNBC basketball teams host TRU Friday and Saturday.
